Schumer Calls Trump "Dysfunctional President" On Senate Floor

|

GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, DAY TWO: In a strongly worded floor speech Monday afternoon, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer slammed President Trump for rejecting two bipartisan immigration deals, noting that the second one Trump rejected was his "most generous offer yet."

Senate Republicans have "forgotten the lessons of the founding fathers and shown they don't know how to compromise," Schumer said. "Not only do they not consult us, they can't even get on the same page as their president -- the president from their own party."

"We're very close on all of the issues we've been debating for months now," he said later. "So close that I thought we might have a deal twice."

"The Congressional leaders tell me to negotiate with President Trump. President Trump tells me to figure it out with the congressional leaders. This political Catch-22, never seen before, has driven our government to dysfunction."

"Americans know why this dysfunction is occurring. Dysfunctional president," he said.

"We are in a Trump Shutdown, and party leaders who won't act without him have created the chaos and the gridlock we find ourselves in today. It all really stems from the president, whose inability to create a deal has created the Trump Shutdown... President Trump walked away from not one, but two bipartisan deals," he added.

"On Friday, in the Oval Office, I made what I thought was a very generous offer to the president, the most generous offer yet."

"The president demanded for months that a deal on DACA included the wall. Most of we Democrats don't think the wall is effective, it is offensive and a waste of money. We're all for tough border security, but any expert will tell you drones and sensory devices and roads and personnel are far more effective than a wall."

"We're very close on all of the issues we've been debating for months now," he said later. "So close that I thought we might have a deal twice. Only for the president to change his mind and walk away. The president must take yes for an answer. Until he does, it is the Trump shutdown. If he says he has love for the DREAMers, let him show it. If he says he needs a wall and border security, accept our offer to do both of those things... So, this is the Trump Shutdown, only President Trump can end it, we Democrats are at the table ready to end it. The president just needs to pull up a chair and end this shutdown."
