President Donald Trump and Chinese vice-premier Liu He on Wednesday signed the first phase of a trade deal that could calm tensions between the two nations that have been embroiled in a trade war.
As part of the deal, China has agreed to increase its purchases of U.S. agricultural and other products, in exchange for the easing of tariffs on Chinese goods.
U.S. officials plan to continue negotiations with Chinese leaders in hopes of reaching a more comprehensive deal that could address broader economic disputes, including what the U.S. says are China’s unfair trade practices.
"Today we take a momentous step -- one that has never been taken before with China -- toward a future of fair and reciprocal trade as we sign phase one of the historic trade deal," Trump said.
