Corker: Trump Debases The Country

|

Sen. Bob Corker told reporters Tuesday morning he regretted voting for Donald Trump for president. He said the "debasement of our nation" is what Trump will be remembered for. Corker also said his governing model is to "divide." Trump and Corker also got in a Twitter tumble this morning following remarks Corker made on morning shows. (Tweets below.)

Trump is scheduled to speak to Republicans at a lunch on Capitol Hill this afternoon.

"I think world leaders are very aware that much of what he says is untrue. Certainly, people here are because these things are provably untrue, I mean, they are factually incorrect and people know the difference. I don't know why he lowers himself to such a low, low standard, and debases our country in a way that he does, but he does," Corker told CNN's Manu Raju this morning before he faced a gang of reporters a few minutes later.

"Do you think he's a role model to children in the United States," CNN's Raju asked.

"No, absolutely not," Corker said.

"I think the things that are happening right now that are harmful to our nation, whether it's the breaking down of when are we going to be doing hearings on some of the things that he purposely is breaking down, relationships we have around the world that have been useful to our nation, but I think at the end of the day when his term is over, I think the debasing of our nation, the constant non-truth telling, and the -- just the name-calling, the things that I think the debasement of our nation is what he will be remembered most for, and that's regretful. And it affects young people. I mean, we have young people who for the first time are watching a president, stating, you know, absolute non-truths nonstop. Personalizing things in the way that he does. It's very sad for our nation," Corker said.

In a series of interviews this morning, Corker repeated recent attacks he laid at Trump's feet. On ABC's Good Morning America, he stood by his remarks that the White House is an "adult day care center." On foreign policy, Corker said Trump should "leave it to the professionals for a while."
