Television News Coverage Of The Suez Canal Freighter Versus The Egyptian Train Crash

|

The week of March 22nd there were two major stories emerging from Egypt: a container ship stuck in the Suez Canal and a train crash that killed at least 30 and injured more than 165. Which received more attention on television news?

The chart below shows total mentions of the Suez Canal across a selection of stations from March 23 to April 1. International stations covered it the most and domestic American channels the least, but despite its multi-billion-dollar impact on global trade, US-based business news channels did not cover it more than international stations.

Despite its high death and injury toll, the graph below shows that the Egyptian train crash that occurred the same week received just a fraction of the international news mentions that the Suez Canal received and domestically it received just 2 mentions on MSNBC, 1 mention on Fox News and 0 mentions on CNN.
