President Biden met Friday with Japan’s prime minister for his first in-person talks with a foreign leader at the White House. Biden delivered a short statement after the meeting and took several questions, including one about the upcoming Tokyo Olympics and one about gun violence.

"Our cooperation is vital in my view — and I think in both our views — to meeting the challenges that face our nations and ensuring the region remains free and open and prosperous," Biden told reporters about the U.S.-Japan relationship during a photo op ahead of the press conference.

"We're going to work together to prove that democracies, can still compete and win the 21st century," Biden said in the Rose Garden next to Japanese PM Yoshihide.
