"Donald Trump is a loser," the former newsman said. "How he must hate that. But he lost the election. He has lost his PGA things for his golf tournament. He wears the Scarlet Letter of 'L,' loser, and how he must hate that. And no amount of gaudy marble or golden toilets can erase that. That's where he is."
"He now is what we call a stone-cold loser," Rather said. "He knows it. It must be driving him crazy. But that is his problem. What we have to deal with is the result of what Donald Trump has done and has not done."
DON LEMON: Are these the darkest days that you have seen?
DAN RATHER: It's the darkest days that I've seen, at least since the dark days of the beginning of World War II. That was a very dark time when the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, but with that possible exception, this is the darkest I've seen.
You know, I have never seen and no one else alive today has ever seen such a brazen frontal attack on our very democracy from within. And by the way, one that very easily could have been a mass death event. There were deaths but not mass deaths but there could have been. Never seen anything like it. Now, I do think that you can see currents of what has been wrong about American society for a long time. The racial divisions being part of that.
But in this moment, with what appears to be, if not a certainty, a high probability, that we are going to have President Trump impeached for the second time in his first and perhaps only time as president, never before happened in our history, and you laid it out with so many other things the pandemic, the terrorism, whether you are going to call it domestic terrorism or not, this is real. This is a real threat to the democracy. What happens to Donald Trump is important, but not as far as important as what happens with the country.
Donald Trump is a loser. How he must hate that. But he lost the election. He has lost his PGA things for his golf tournament. He wears the Scarlet Letter of 'L,' loser, and how he must hate that. And no amount of gaudy marble or golden toilets can erase that. That's where he is.
What happens to him, whether he is made to pay any kind of price for what he has deliberately done for the country is going to answer your question of what happens to the soul of the country. What happens to the very future of the country. I don't like to be a doomsayer, I'm an optimist as you know, Don, we can get through this, but we have to wake up and understand that we're being torn apart by extremes and it's the extreme right and unless it comes to a pretty quick halt, we are going to be in very deep trouble...
LEMON: Can America ever remove this stain of the stain of this presidency, Dan?
RATHER: Short answer is no. There may have been a time back six months, nine months, maybe longer, but now, to be as I say, is highly probable he is going to be at least impeached. That doesn't mean he is going to be found guilty by the Senate.
He becomes the second president, the only president, to be impeached twice, this, this cannot be removed. That's why I say, that he now is what we call a stone-cold loser. He knows it. It must be driving him crazy. But that is his problem. What we have to deal with is the result of what Donald Trump has done and has not done.
