Biden throws the statistic that there are more than 500 unaccompanied minors in federal custody after being apprehended at the border at the president, but Trump replies that most of those children were separated from their parents before they arrived in the U.S.
"Children are brought here by coyotes and lots of bad people," the president said, adding that the government was "trying very hard" to find their families.
"Coyotes didn't bring them over, their parents were with them," Biden said in response. "They were separated from their parents. And it makes us the laughing stock and it violates every notion of who we are as a nation."
Trump returns fire by challenging the Democratic narrative that his administration built "cages" to house illegal immigrants, saying that they were really built in 2014 under the Obama administration.
"Who built the cages, Joe?" Trump asked. "Who built the cages? Talk about who built the cages."
"Let's talk about what happened," Biden continued. "Parents — their kids were ripped from their arms, and separated. And now they cannot find over 500 of the sets of those parents. And those kids are alone. Nowhere to go, nowhere to go. It's criminal. It's criminal.”
"They are so well taken care of," Trump said. "They’re in facilities that are so clean."
