Richard Grenell to WH Reporters: I Don't Think You Can Find Kosovo and Serbia On A Map

|

Ambassador Richard Grenell, the special envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations, mocked reporters for not focusing on the peace process and told them they are not relevant outside of Washington, D.C. at a press briefing on Friday.

"I'm just going to talk about Kosovo-Serbia. I don't know if you can find it on a map...you might be too young...maybe it's too complicated an issue for you all," Grenell said.

"You guys don't understand what's happening outside of Washington, D.C. People aren't listening to you anymore," he said. "It's really a crisis in journalism and I think it's because people are too young to understand issues like Kosovo and Serbia."

QUESTION: A question for Ambassador Grenell -- Ambassador Grenell, clearly you were effective here as the special envoy to these talks between Serbia and Kosovo, but I wanted to ask you about another initiative you lead last year. You kicked off the Trump administration's push to decriminalize homosexuality--

GRENELL: Yeah, I'm going to just talk about Kosovo and Serbia. I don't know if you could find it on a map, but this is atrocious. I have to tell you guys, you might be too young to understand what this issue is about. Maybe the older journalists should step up and to say this is a big deal. This is a big issue.

I'm astounded at what happens in Washington, D.C. and especially in this room. I've got to tell you, get substantive. Maybe it's too complicated of an issue for you all, but--

QUESTION: --Respectfully, this is the first time we've had the opportunity to speak with these individuals. We have a lot of questions to address--

GRENELL: --Okay, but today is about Kosovo and Serbia. Let's take a little time and to talk about this 21 year issue, Peter. I mean, 21 years here. We're getting the same questions that are all politics. I don't--you guys don't understand what's happening outside of Washington, D.C. People aren't listening to you anymore. It's really a crisis in journalism and I think it's because people are too young to understand issues like Kosovo and Serbia.

QUESTION: All right, can I ask you--

GRENELL: --How about a substantive question--

QUESTION: --I don't think any of us came here for a lecture about our questioning

GRENELL: --Okay, well I didn't come here--

QUESTION: --But the question I would like to ask you--

GRENELL: --To not talk about anything but Kosovo--

QUESTION: --The question I would like to ask you is, is it accurate to say that it's full economic normalization? There was some ambiguity as to whether or not that is what the deal is about.
