Chicago Mayor Lightfoot: Ending Institutional Racism Is "Really About Economic Empowerment"

|

Monday at the first night of the 2020 Democratic Convention, Vice President Biden spoke with social justice activist Jamira Burley, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo, NAACP President Derrick Johnson, and author Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner, about how he can work towards solving racial issues in the U.S.

CHICAGO MAYOR LORI LIGHTFOOT: It really is about economic empowerment because if people are lifted out of poverty, and they are given an opportunity to feel a stake in their own future, that goes a long way. We are also challenging all kinds of institutions from corporations to community-based organizations to think about what they can do better to end systemic racism and make sure that we are uplifting quality of life in communities, but also the voices of people that traditionally don’t have a seat at the table.
