Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot: Overnight Riots, Looting Following Police Shooting Are Not Legitimate Protests

|

Looting and property damage has been reported throughout downtown Chicago overnight after crowds gathered at the scene of a police-involved shooting. Looting and rioting continued into Monday morning and police said they made more than 100 arrests.

Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown and Mayor Lori Lightfoot are scheduled to discuss the overnight violence.

"This was not protected First Amendment speech," Mayor Lightfoot said. "This was not poor people engaged in petty theft to feed themselves. This was straight u felony criminal conduct."
