Schumer: If Senate Impeachment Trial Has No Witnesses It Will Be Seen As "A Sham Trial, A Show Trial"

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer outlined his requests for the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, asking that additional documents and witnesses be included in the proceedings. So far, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated he plans to hold a quick trial and will work in line with the White House.

"Sen. McConnell has come up with no good reason why the trial shouldn’t have these witnesses or documents," Schumer said in a news conference on Dec. 23. Schumer spoke after newly released email shows U.S. aid to Ukraine was ordered to be withheld shortly after Trump’s call with Ukraine’s president.

"First," Schumer said of the documents he is requesting, "documents related to the efforts to pressure Ukraine to announce certain political investigations."

"Second, documents related to the order to hold and later release military assistance to Ukraine."

"And third, documents related to the withholding of a White House meeting that was desperately sought by the newly elected president of Ukraine," he stated.

"It is hard to imagine a trial without documents and witnesses," Schumer said. "If it doesn't have documents and witnesses, it is going to seem to the American people that it is a sham trial, a show trial."
