Former Vice President Joe Biden got into a tense back-and-forth with someone asking about his son's business in Ukraine during a campaign stop in New Hampton, Iowa, challenging him to a push-up contest, questioning his IQ and seeming to refer to him as "fat."
UPDATE: Biden spokesperson Symone Sanders strongly pushed back on the assertion that Biden called the man "fat," saying: "The VP began to say 'Look, facts' then said 'here's the deal.' If you've been to a Biden event, you've heard this before."
To be clear: Any assertion VP Biden said a word about the gentleman's appearance is making this something it is not. In the latter part of the exchange, the VP began to say "Look, facts" then said "here's the deal." If you've been to a Biden event, you've heard this before.— Symone D. The voter who got in a confrontation with Biden — who refused to give his name but said he is a registered independent — almost got in a fight with another voter after the event. Biden says he didn't lose his temper. "What I wanted to do is shut this down."— Mike Memoli (@mikememoli) December 5, 2019
On Trump, says he won't engage if this happens in general. "He's comfortable mud wrestling. ... He doesn't know much about anything else. ... Let's keep our eye on the ball."
"I've got a question I want you to answer. We all know Trump has been messing around in Ukraine over there, saying that they want to investigate you. He has no backbone, we know that. But you, on the other hand, sent your son over there to get a job and work for a gas company that he had no experience with gas or nothing in order to get access for the president. So you're selling access to the president, just like he was," the man asked.
"You're a damn liar, man. That's not true," Biden shot back at the man. "No one has said my son has done anything wrong, and I did not on any occasion, and nobody has ever said it."
"You're tellin' me, I see it on the TV," the man said.
"You see it on the TV, I know you do," Biden said. "By the way, I'm not sedentary, I don't-- I get up and-- Look, the reason I'm running is I've been around a long time and I know more than most people know. I know what I know, that's why I'm running."
Biden went on to challenge the man to a push-up contest and an IQ test.
"You want to check my shape man, let's do pushups together here, man," Biden said. "Let's run. Let's do whatever you want to do. Let's take an IQ test. Ok?"
"Number two, no one has said my son has done anything wrong, and I did not on any occasion, and no one has ever said it--"
"I did not say you were doing anything wrong," the man said.
"You said I set up my son to work on an oil company, isn't that what you said? Get your words straight, Jack!" Biden roared.
"I hear on MSNBC all the time--" the man began.
"You didn't hear that on MSNBC, you did not hear that on MSNBC, look, I'm not going to get into an argument with you, man," Biden said. "Look, fat, look, here's the deal."
Biden told a FOX News reporter that if called as a witness in the Trump impeachment with regard to his son's business in Ukraine, he would refuse to appear.
