Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office Wednesday, President Trump said the Kurds of Syria are "no angels," and Turkey’s invasion of Northern Syria is "not our problem."
"If Turkey goes into Syria it is between Turkey and Syria. It’s not our problem," he said during a photo op with Italian President Sergio Mattarella. "The Kurds know how to fight. As I said, they are not angels."
"Syria may have some help with Russia and that’s fine," Trump said. "It’s a lot of sand. They’ve got a lot of sand over there, so there’s a lot of sand they can play with."
"It used to be called the Soviet Union, now it’s called Russia for a reason - because they lost so much money in Afghanistan they had to downsize," Trump said. "So if Russia wants to get involved with Syria that’s really up to them. They have a problem with Turkey, they have a problem with the border. It’s not our border, we shouldn’t be losing lives over it."
"The Kurds are much safer right now, but the Kurds know how to fight," he said. "They fought with us. We paid a lot of money to fight with them but that's ok."
