Scalise: Can't Blame Trump For El Paso Shooting Any More Than You Can Blame Bernie Sanders For My Shooting

House Minority Whip Steve Scalise, who was shot by a self-identified Bernie Sanders supporter during a Congressional baseball practice in 2017, argued against claims that President Trump's rhetoric is responsible for last week's mass shooting in El Paso.

"The president's no more responsible for that shooting as your next guest, Bernie Sanders, is for my shooting," Scalise said, adding that it is "a very slippery slope" to begin assigning blame for such actions.

"There’s no place for those kinds of attacks and attacking someone based on their ethnicity," Scalise told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday. "What we need to do is to find out those people who have slipped through the cracks, let’s make sure these background check systems work properly and are rooting out the people who shouldn’t be able to purchase a gun."
