President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday that he is imposing personal sanctions on Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, designed to deny Khamenei and those closely associated with him access to financial resources. Trump said the supreme leader is responsible for Iran’s hostile conduct.
"These measures represent a strong and proportionate response to Iran's increasingly provocative actions," Trump said. "We will continue to increase pressure on Tehran until the regime abandons its dangerous activities and aspirations, including its pursuit of nuclear weapons, increased enrichment of Uranium, production of ballistic missiles, support for terrorism, fueling of foreign conflicts, and belligerent acts conducted against the U.S. and its allies."
"Never can Iran have a nuclear weapon," he said. "Included in this, we want the stoppage of their sponsoring of terrorism, they sponsor terrorism at a level that no one has ever seen before, and that's been over the last number of years."
