Ocasio-Cortez on Biden: If "You Used To Support The Hyde Amendment" Don't Call Yourself A Progressive

|

"The Young Turks" Rebel HQ host Emma Vigeland sits down with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to discuss why Joe Biden opposing the Hyde Amendment is a deal-breaker for many Democratic primary voters. Biden reversed his long-held position on the Hyde Amendment, which bans federal funding for most abortions, on Thursday afternoon, but Ocasio-Cortez says that if "you used to support the Hyde Amendment" you are not a Progressive.

"If your pride is being a moderate centrist candidate, say that," she said. "Say, 'I'm proud to be a centrist, I'm proud to be funded by Wall Street. I'm proud to not push as hard as I can on women's rights.' Say it, own it, be it, but don't come out here and say you're a progressive candidate, but at the same time not support repealing something as basic as the Hyde Amendment."

EMMA VIGELAND, THE YOUNG TURKS: Joe Biden says, "I am the most progressive candidate in the race, I have the most progressive record." That's just patently false.

REP. ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ: Right, right. And I think record is important because it shows a consistency in values and beliefs. But the term "progressive" is getting hijacked so much that people think it just means "Democrat" now. And not all Democrats are progressive, but if you're going to come out and say you used to support the Hyde Amendment, which prevents us from funding clinics like Planned Parenthood, that's not progressive. That's not a progressive position.

You know what, if your pride is being a moderate centrist candidate, say that. Say, "I'm proud to be a centrist, I'm proud to be funded by Wall Street. I'm proud to not push as hard as I can on women's rights." Say it, own it, be it, but don't come out here and say you're a progressive candidate, but at the same time not support repealing something as basic as the Hyde Amendment.
