On Wednesday's edition of "Anderson Cooper 360" on CNN, New York Times White House correspondent Maggie Haberman and CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin discussed Attorney General Bill Barr's handling of the Mueller report. Toobin said that Barr might have been brainwashed by watching FOX News, while Haberman suggests that Barr might just be unaware of what he's doing.
"Barr’s been out of the game for a very long time," Haberman suggested. "And I think that’s sort of an important thing to remember… Out of the media realm. I think he doesn’t really understand necessarily how some of this is playing. He is not used to all of us sitting here for as long as we are talking about this."
"He hasn't been in a cave, but people are not in our business don't necessarily follow it this closely," she added. "I just think it is possible he doesn't understand the speed of how this all travels."
"I have an alternative. That's a very plausible scenario... Here's a different theory," Toobin said. "That he spent the last 20 years watching FOX News and he's become a real Trump supporter. He's like everyone else in the Trump Administration."
"I just think if you look at his behavior it is not that of a geriatric, it is that of a partisan," Toobin said.
"One doesn't have to be geriatric to not understand the modern media moment, with all due respect," Haberman replied. "You could just not be part of this milieu and not understand how things are going to play."
"We can't forget that the way he got this job as by volunteering to write a 19-page paper that said the president is not guilty of obstruction of justice," Toobin shot back.
"He takes a very expansive view of executive power, there is no question about that," Haberman said.
