One year after racial and political tensions sparked a violent rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, Republican Congressman Tom Garrett Jr. revealed to CNN that the Russians were involved in stirring up trouble online. Garrett represents Virginia's 5th district which includes suburbs of Charlottesville.
"I sat in a closed session briefing probably two months ago about Charlottesville with the director of the FBI," Garrett said, "and asked if Russian inter-meddling had to do with fomenting the flames of what happened in Charlottesville. I was told yes, it did. I asked: Is this information classified? They said no, and I waited until today [to tell you]."
This is what happens. The Russian intermeddling is seeking to pit Americans against Americans, to undermine confidence in Western-style democracies, it has done so in the Baltic States, it has done so in Western Europe. It will continue to do so."
"They're trying to make the world safe for kleptocrats, thugs, oligarchs, and dictators like Putin," he said.
"They use events like this divisive racial fight … and this is the sort of thing they do. As a member of Homeland Security, that’s what scares me most, that Americans will be pitted against Americans over real differences, but that are minimal in the grand scheme of things," Rep. Garrett also said.
