U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said Tuesday at the Security Council that Israel acted with "restraint" in its confrontation this week with Palestinian protesters at the Gaza border.
The ambassadors joined for a moment of silence for the more than 60 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces on Monday before engaging in a heated debate.
"Who among us would accept this type of activity on your border? No one would," Haley said. "No country in this chamber would act with more restraint than Israel has."
"In fact, the records of several countries here today suggest they would be much less restrained," she quipped.
Kuwait's ambassador, who requested the meeting, said that Israel was violating international law and called on the United Nations to protect unarmed Palestinians.
"The Palestinian people are looking to the United Nations and the Security Council to activate what this organization has taken upon itself in order to achieve the maintenance of international peace and security," Kuwaiti Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaibi said.
