The Republican National Committee launched a new website this week, www.LyinComey.com, featuring these videos to remind people what Democrats said about former FBI director James Comey in the wake the 2016 election. They are trying to get ahead of the release of Comey's tell-all book next Tuesday. The site quotes several leading Democrats condemning Comey for his role in the Clinton email investigation:
"The FBI has no credibility," the website quotes Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters from January 2017.
"Maybe he’s not in the right job," House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi is quoted as saying about Comey in November 2016.
"[Comey] badly overstepped his bounds,” the site quotes Hillary Clinton as saying in September 2017.
“I do not have confidence in [Comey] any longer," the site quotes Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as saying in November 2016.
"Comey may use his book tour to push the phony narrative that President Trump obstructed the Russia investigation," LyinComey.com says. "THE TRUTH: No matter what his grandstanding book says, Comey has already confirmed multiple times under oath that neither President Trump nor his staff asked him to stop the Russia investigation.
The president also targeted Comey on Friday, tweeting:
James Comey is a proven LEAKER & LIAR. Virtually everyone in Washington thought he should be fired for the terrible job he did-until he was, in fact, fired. He leaked CLASSIFIED information, for which he should be prosecuted. He lied to Congress under OATH. He is a weak and.....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 13, 2018
....untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a terrible Director of the FBI. His handling of the Crooked Hillary Clinton case, and the events surrounding it, will go down as one of the worst “botch jobs” of history. It was my great honor to fire James Comey!— Donald J. The GOP site also highlights Comey's claim that he never leaked to the press, even though it later came out he "asked a friend to share the content" of one of his memos from a meeting with President Trump to the New York Times.
Another section of the site claims that Comey "wants to portray himself as a non-partisan, by-the-book Boy Scout rather than a leaker and a politically motivated Washington insider."
The site also pre-emptively responded to CNN, quoting:
Hillary Clinton said Comey “bowed to partisan pressure.”
Nancy Pelosi called Comey a “political operative” who threw a “Molotov cocktail” that politically damaged Democrats.
CNN’s Chris Cillizza criticized Comey as a “typical Washington insider.”
CNN’s Brian Todd said Comey “revealed his skills as an inside Washington operator.”
