A.B. Stoddard: We Have No Idea If Trump Has Turned Politics Into A Permanent TV Show

|

In an appearance on MSNBC Monday afternoon, RCP columnist A.B. Stoddard expressed a widespread concern about the media environment in the age of Trump.

"The cable [networks covered] two hours of his rallies, half an hour before, the whole rally, half an hour afterward, they gave [Trump] more than $2 billion in free coverage. Of course, he won," she said about the media's love-hate relationship with the president.

She warned: "We can see another billionaire with super-duper name ID come back in in the next cycle and this could be how you win the Oval Office."

"We have no idea whether we're going to go back to retail campaigning and earning it the hard way. We have no idea if he's turned this into a permanent TV show," Stoddard lamented. "We're all sort of powerless to determine what is the definition of news."

A.B. STODDARD: Well, it's hard because it is a story and so especially when he's going to flirt with Dianne Feinstein over a bill of love and then again over guns, you know, it's news. So, someone is going to pay --

NICOLE WALLACE, MSNBC: Even if nothing happens.

A.B. STODDARD: Rght. It's still sort of the news of the day. He is the consummate subject-changer, and it is probably the fit over everything that was happening, probably led to the announcement on the tariffs. Though I do think in one instance he is a loud and proud protectionist. He has had this fixation, once a commanding economy in Japan to speak about the Japanese, then he switched to the Chinese.

I do know that congressmen can do a lot in the next couple days in his administration. But he's going to bang his fists over this one. But on guns and on immigration and a lot of these issues, he doesn't really care.

There are no ten minutes from now. It's literally the 5 inches of oxygen in front of him.

And it is a big complaint. You can talk to people, Democrats who thought, you know, the cables took two hours of his rallies, half an hour before, the whole rally, half an hour afterward, they gave more than 2 billion in free coverage. Of course, he won.

He never went to a bookshop. It was all about the Donald Trump show.

And that is a real problem. We can see a billionaire with super-duper name ID come back in in the next cycle and this could be how you win the Oval Office. We have no idea whether we're going to go back to retail campaigning and earning it the hard way. We have no idea if he's turned this into a permanent TV show. We're all sort of powerless to determine what is the definition of news. Him babbling on in some meeting and we all know it's B.S.? How do you stop that? How do you stop that?
