Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) told CNN on Saturday that he's willing to give President Trump his border wall if the Republicans in Congress agree to legal protections for the "DREAMers." Gutiérrez has been one of President Trump's most vocal opponents.
"This is no longer about a wall," the Congressional Democrat said about the government shutdown.
REP. LUIS GUTIERREZ: I think it would be a monumental waste of taxpayer money to build a monument to stupidity, but if that is what it is going to take to get 800,000 young men and women and give them a chance to live freely and openly in America, then I'll roll up my sleeves, I'll go down there with bricks and mortar and begin the wall.
Because a brick for lives, okay? Let's do it.
Let me just say: That wall is offensive to me. It is insulting to me and people like me who have come to this country, but you know, people of my generation will do what they have to do. Because that is what we do for younger people.
I want to make it clear: Here's the thing. Do you think it will open the government? It will not open the government.
Even though we find the wall, it will not. That's what Chuck Schumer told the president. They know this is no longer an issue, as repugnant as it is to us, we will finance it.
"The DREAMers -- what have they done wrong? They've gone through three background checks, let's reach an agreement."
