Don Lemon on his CNN show Tuesday night and Wednesday night said President Trump should be thanking former President Obama for "handing" him a really good economy. He said on Tuesday that he doesn't think "people are stupid" and "realize" that Trump is "riding the momentum" of an economy Obama created.
On Wednesday's show, Lemon used the 'thank you' line and said he wonders if Trump "would be crying" if he was given the economy that Obama inherited when he took the presidency in 2009.
"He is riding the momentum of President Obama, and I think people realize that. I don't think people are stupid," Lemon said during the network's coverage of the Alabama special election Tuesday night.
"I don't understand why, well, maybe I do why the folks in the Trump administration won't admit that the economy was doing well under President Obama," Lemon pondered Wednesday night.
"This current president should be saying, 'Thank you, President Obama,'" Lemon had said earlier.
"Thank you, President Obama, for not being president anymore," guest Steve Moore quipped.
"For getting us out of a recession and then handing a really good job market and economy to this current president," Lemon responded.
Don Lemon on Wednesday night:
LEMON: I don't understand why -- I don't understand why, well, maybe I do why the folks in the Trump administration won't admit that the economy was doing well under President Obama. That he had the worst recession since the Great Depression and was coming out of that.
I just keep wondering when this president said he was handed a mess, if he had been handed the economy that Barack Obama -- this is facts. I wonder if he would be crying -- oh my gosh, can you imagine?
Don Lemon on Tuesday night (transcript below):
LEMON: I don't think people believe that. Listen, we're not in a recession. The economy is doing well right now, and people are concerned and wondering, why are you passing tax cuts when the economy is already doing well? And I think, you know, Donald Trump and his administration uses that line well, the mess of the former president.
I often wonder if Donald Trump had inherited the actual mess from the actual recession of the Bush years, what they would be saying. Because jobs just don't happen overnight. You have, you know, consumer confidence. It's high. People are, you know -- the job market is good, but it was also good under Obama. He is riding the momentum of President Obama, and I think people realize that. I don't think people are stupid.
