CNN's David Gergen Praises Trump For Putin Meeting: "This Was Presidential, This Was Big League Stuff"

|

Former Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, and Clinton White House adviser David Gergen said Friday that President Donald Trump's meeting with Russia's Vladimir Putin in Germany showed "we were back to normal life for the first time." He told Brooke Baldwin on CNN, "This is what we expect from our president."

Gergen has served former Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. He pointed out that the originally scheduled 30 minute meeting extended much longer:

DAVID GERGEN: The bigger takeaway here for me right now is that he [Trump] seemed presidential today. And we actually had a Secretary of State who was explaining stuff to us. How often have we had that? The bigger takeaway here for me right now is that he seemed presidential today. And we actually had a Secretary of State who was explaining stuff to us. How often have we had that? This seemed like we were back to normal life for the first time, one of the only times in the last few months. This is what we expect from our president.

Gergen has mostly been a critic of President Trump up until this point, calling his decision last month to not take part in the Paris Climate Accord one of "the most shameful acts in our history" and "grotesquely irresponsible."
