Above, 'The Young Turks' co-host Jordan Chariton confronts Clinton campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri and campaign chair John Podesta, whose emails were hacked and released by WikiLeaks, about some of the statements Clinton was revealed to have made behind closed doors in paid speeches to Wall Street banks. The encounter took place Sunday in the spin room following the second presidential debate.
"When Secretary Clinton talks about 'misunderstandings' with banks, and that there was 'politicizing' behind closed doors, what does she mean by that?" Chariton asked Podesta.
"I didn't hear her say that," Podesta said.
WikiLeaks revealed Friday that John Podesta was concerned about how the public would interpret the transcripts of her paid speeches to multinational banks.
In an Oct. 24, 2013 speech at a Goldman Sachs investment symposium, Clinton made the case that it is "an oversimplification" to say the U.S. banking system caused the 2008 economic crisis, and that blaming banks is "politicizing" the issue. "I think that there’s a lot that could have been avoided in terms of both misunderstanding and really politicizing what happened," she said. In that same 2013 speech to Goldman Sachs representatives, Clinton told Wall Street in general: "I represented all of you for eight years."
Chariton also confronted Clinton campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri about the quotes revealed by WikiLeaks: "What did Hillary Clinton mean when she talked to banks saying there was a 'misunderstanding' and politicization' of their role in the econmic crash?"
"I'm not sure what you're referring to," Palmieri replied.
"Her behind-closed door speeches, she mentioned to Goldman Sachs... that there was a lot of 'politicizing' and a 'misunderstanding' of their role in the crash," Chairton explained.
"She thinks that a lot of political heat can get in the way of a substantive discussion, and beyond that I don't know the particular," Palmieri replied.
Below, Chariton gives a wrap-up of what he thinks are the most important takeaways from the Podesta leaks:
