Obama: Supreme Court Immigration Decision "Takes Us Further From The Country We Aspire To Be"

The president reacts to the Supreme Court's 4-4 decision upholding a lower court's ruling that his executive actions to defer deportation for certain illegal immigrants is unconstitutional.

PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA: One of the reasons why America is such a diverse and inclusive nation is because we are a nation of immigrants. Our founders conceived of this country as a refuge for the world, and for more than two centuries, welcoming wave after wave of immigrants has kept us a youthful and dynamic and entrepreneurial nation. It has shaped our character and made us stronger, but for more than two decades now, our immigration system has been broken, everybody acknowledges that it has been broken. And the fact that the Supreme Court wasn't able to issue a decision today doesn't just set the system back even further, it takes us further from the country we aspire to be.
