Halperin: Trump Is Right, Republicans Are Conspiring to Take Nomination Away; "Willing To Have a Very Messy Convention"

|

Bloomberg's Mark Halperin reports Republican elites are trying to "orchestrate a little bit of grassroots organic support" behind the scenes to create a scenario where presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is denied the party's nomination. Halperin said the establishment is being careful to "be seen as leading the movement."

"The leaders of the party would prefer Trump not be the nominee," Mark Halperin said on Monday's edition of Morning Joe. "And they're willing to have a very messy convention if that could somehow happen. They don't want to be seen as leading the movement."

"Trump's right," Halperin said, confirming Trump's suspicions. This is being orchestrated. But there is some grassroots support among some delegates to say, we want to be able to vote our conscience (a moral clause)."

Halperin said Trump has a meeting scheduled today with senior advisors and family members to flee out what went wrong and decide how to change course.

"Trump's right," Halperin told the Morning Joe panel. "This is being orchestrated. But there is some grassroots support among some delegates to say, we want to be able to vote our conscience (a moral clause)."

"Trump is right that there are people plotting against him. I don't know that it will succeed, but it is a big moment," Halperin said.

JOE SCARBOROUGH, 'MORNING JOE' HOST: Mark Halperin, obviously, a lot of Republican leaders feel like they're in an absolutely terrible position right now and this move quietly grows to try to get Donald Trump pushed to the side. It is certainly a long shot. But what's it looking like right now?

MARK HALPERIN, BLOOMBERG: It's a fascinating moment in the history of Trump's relationship with the Republican party. The big turning point is now -- and Paul Ryan's interview with Chuck [Todd] illustrated this -- the leaders of the party would prefer Trump not be the nominee. And they're willing to have a very messy convention if that could somehow happen. They don't want to be seen as leading the movement.

Because they know it would fail if it's seen as elites trying to take the nomination away from him. So they're hoping to have behind the scenes, orchestrate a little bit of grassroots organic support.

Trump's right. This is being orchestrated. But there is some grassroots support among some delegates to say, we want to be able to vote our conscience (a moral clause). We know Paul Ryan said to Chuck Todd, people need to be able to vote their conscience. Members of Congress need to decide on their own, delegates do.

Trump is right that there are people plotting against him. I don't know that it will succeed, but it is a big moment. He says he wants the party unified, he's going to have to work to unify it because people are not out there, backing him up right now.
