Clinton on Radical Islam: Trump "Obsessed With Name Calling," "It Matters What We Do, Not What We Say"

|

Hillary Clinton reacts to the Orlando terror attack on NBC's TODAY Show. Clinton was asked why she won't use the term 'radical Islam' to describe the attacks or terrorism.

"I think Trump, as usual, is obsessed with name-calling. And in my perspective, it matters what we do, not what we say," she responded.

"We've got to stop them and we will," the former Secretary of State demanded. "We will have to defeat radical jihadist terrorism and we will. To me, radical jihadism, radical Islamism, I think they mean the same thing."

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, NBC NEWS: Why wouldn't you describe it as radical Islam? I guess the criticism on [Donald Trump's] part is you're exalting niceties or political correctness over just calling something what it is: a vicious, vicious distortion of Islam.

FMR. SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON: I think Trump, as usual, is obsessed with name-calling. And in my perspective, it matters what we do, not what we say. It matters that we got bin Laden, not what name we called him. But if he is somehow suggesting that I don't call this for what it is, he hasn't been listening. I have clearly said that we face terrorism enemies that use Islam to justify slaughtering innocent people. We've got to stop them and we will. We will have to defeat radical jihadist terrorism and we will. To me, radical jihadism, radical Islamism, I think they mean the same thing.

We can not fall into the trap set by the gun lobby that says if you can't stop every shooting and every incident you shouldn't try to stop any. That is not how laws work. It's not common sense.

We need to get these weapons of war off the streets. We had an assault weapons ban, it expired, and we need to reinstate it. From San Bernardino to Aurora, Colorado to Sandy Hook and now to Orlando, we have seen the devastation that these military style weapons cause.
