The Drudge Report headlined this Wall Street Journal article profiling Chinese Finance Minister Lou Jiwei as: "Trump Drives China Crazy," highlighting the Chinese official's characterization of Trump as an "irrational type."
Asked about the tough talk on China in the presidential campaign, from both Democrats and Republicans, Mr. Lou said Americans needed to recognize the U.S. and China “are mutually dependent on each other” and both have a lot to lose in any economic confrontation. “Our economic cycles are intertwined,” he said. “We have more in common than sets us apart.”
Mr. Lou also said he understood that rhetoric in a presidential campaign gets heated and often doesn’t reflect the policies an incoming administration would adopt. With a new administration, he said, “U.S.-China ties should be more or less as they are now.”
Trump responded Sunday at a rally in Staten Island, NY, saying that over the course of the past thirty years, China has "waged an economic war against [the United States]."
"You have to look at my response to China," Trump said excitedly. "Because it is what someone has to say. Because we can't continue to get ripped off like we're being ripped off. You've got to look at it... I'm not talking about war. But they have waged economic war against us."
"And I'm not angry about China, in fact I respect them... I'm angry at our leaders for being so incompetent that they allow it to happen. And I said this as part of my response to the Wall Street Journal when they just called. I said, in the history of the world, this is the greatest theft ever perpetrated by anyone or any country, what China has done to us."
"I see the empty buildings all over Staten Island," he said. "I see them all over... Really really sad. That's not going to happen anymore with me."
"The truth is, we have all the cards," Trump said.
DONALD TRUMP, STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK: Today [Sunday morning] on the top of Drudge [Report]. Matt Drudge is a phenomenal person and a good guy -- it is a big deal, top of Drudge.
[Drudge linked to a piece in the Wall Street Journal saying] China is upset with Donald Trump.
How dare them? So they go -- They're upset. This is the story -- biggest story, top of Drudge. Big story.
China is upset because of the way Donald Trump is talking about trade with China. They're ripping us off, folks.
It is time. I'm so happy they're upset. They haven't been upset with us in thirty years.
They're never upset. We have a trade deficit with China of $500 billion per year. Okay? They tax. And you know they said we're not living up to treaties. They're the ones not living upo to agreements. They tax. I have friends who are manufacturers who can not get their product into China, and when they do, they have to pay a tax on it.
And let me tell you -- It is them that is the problem. And they're going to treat us fairly and they're going to treat us justly or it is bye bye. Bye bye...
What we don't know because our leaders are incompetant, or because they are taken care of by the special interests. Which also happens...

You have to look at my answer. My response to China. Because it is what someone has to say. Because we can't continue to get ripped off like we're being ripped off. You've got to look at it.
And it is not war. I'm not talking about war. But they have waged economic war against us.
What China has done --we have rebuilt China, so I hope you're all happy with that-- In the meantime you can't get funding for your schools on Staten Island, or for your roads, which have potholes, I hate to say.
So Just so you understand, we have rebuilt China. They have bridges going up, they have railroads like you've never seen. We have the old Long Island railroad... like we're a third world country, folks.
They have trains that go 250 MPH, we have old stuff. So here's the story, what China has done to us --they are only one country, I hate to use them, but they are the biggest abuser-- they abuse us beyond belief.
And I'm not angry about China, in fact I respect them, I made a lot of money with China... I'm not angry at China, I'm angry at our leaders for being so incompetant that they allow it to happen.
And I said this as part of my response to the Wall Street Journal when they just called.
I said, in the history of the world, this is the greatest theft ever perpetrated by anyone or any country, what China has done to us.
It is the greatest single theft. They have taken our jobs, they have taken our money, I mean I see the empty buildings all over Staten Island... I see them all over... Really really sad. That's not going to happen anymore with me...
The truth is, we have all the cards.
