Trump to Fox News Channel's Carl Cameron: I'm In Favor Of "Fair And Balanced" Trade Deals

|

At his news conference Tuesday night following primary victories in Mississippi and Michigan, Donald Trump fields a question from Fox News Channel's Carl Cameron about how he can reassure Republicans who are concerned that he is not conservative enough to lead the party.

Trump responds that on almost every issue, "nobody is more conservative than me," but one place where he may face criticism is his trade policies.

"The one thing I guess people could say, is that on trade. I am a free trader, believe it or not, but I am also a smart trader," he said. "Carl, I love this question, but the only thing I can say to people who say I am not conservative on trade is... We have a trade deficit with China of $500 billion per year... It's got to be fair trade, or as you would put it: Fair and Balanced trade."

"The problem is, you have people in the National Review, and they're eggheads. They're just eggheads. No common sense whatsoever."

CARL CAMERON, FOX NEWS CHANNEL: As you just described in your own words, Lindsey Graham Mitt Romney, have been attacking you viciously.

How can you win them back?

DONALD TRUMP: I don't know if I have to win everybody.

CARL CAMERON: You said this is something different, something that hasn't happened in a hundred years. Are you changint he Republican party? Are you reforming it? And if so, how do you assure conservatives that it is not in the wrong direction from their view?

DONALD TRUMP: Let's talk about that because it is so interesting. I'm not really changing the Republican Party, because I am a conservative.

No one is more conservative than me on the energy independence. Nobody is more conservative than me on the military. Nobody is more conservative than me on taking care of our great veterans, who are absolutely maligned.

Nobody is more conservative than me on healthcare, where we are going to repeal and replace Obamacare. And on budgets, whether it is the penny deal, so many different things.

Carl, we owe $19 trillion, we've got to start paying off debt.

We don't have to do it quickly, but we have to start bringing it down to a level that is sustainable because we are going in the wrong direction.

And certainly nobody is more conservative than me on the border.

The one thing I guess people could say, is that on trade. I am a free trader, believe it or not, but I am also a smart trader. We can not let China, they're wonderful, but their leaders are too smart for our leaders... Nobody is more conservative than me on trade. The problem
I have, is you have people in the National Review, and they're eggheads. They're just eggheads. No common sense whatsoever.

No common sense whatsoever. It is not free trade when China charges tax to get our product in, and they don't let our product in anyway, and yet they take thier product and send it to us like it is nothing.

We have a trade deficit with China of $500 billion per year.

We have a trade defecit with Japan of over $100 billion per year.

We have a trade deficit with Mexico. That is how Mexico is going to pay for the wall. $58 billion per year. 100%, its 100%. These guys come up that I'm against, and they say: "You're not going to get Mexico to pay for the wall."

I say, of course I am. We have a trade deficit with Mexico of $58 billion per year. The wall is going to cost $10 billion.

You tell me I can't make thatvdeal? That's an easy deal.

The only thing Carl, I love this question, but the only thing I can say to people who say I am not conservative on trade is, it is because I want fair trade. I want free trade, but for free trade you have to have smart people on both sides. And we don't have smart people on our side.

It's got to be fair trade, or as you would put it: Fair and Balanced trade.
