Today on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," former Pennsylvania Gov. and Secretary of Homeland Security under Georgw W. BushTom Ridge discussed his endorsement of Republican presidential candidate John Kasich and said “on Election Day, John will prevail in Ohio.”
He added that GOP rival Sen. Marco Rubio is a "talented young man," but "record trumps rhetoric."
“While I think it's very important that Marco Rubio and Senator Cruz have contributed as senators… there's no doubt in my mind that being a governor is far, far better preparation for the ultimate responsibility as president of the United States,” Ridge said.
Transcript via MSNBC:
SAM STEIN: You stood out yesterday as one of the few prominent Republican officials who did not endorse Marco Rubio.
And I'm wondering, is it just that the senator doesn't have a proven record that made you hesitate from jumping on that band wagon or was there something more about Marco's record?
RIDGE: Well, I think -- I think Senator Rubio has -- is a very talented young man. But you can well imagine that I am kind of partial to governors.
I think it's one thing to be part of a very important group called the Senate of the United States and cast a vote. You're one of 100. I think it says even more to be a governor, where you ultimately have that political responsibility and accountability to succeed.
And so, I think, frankly, record trumps rhetoric. And while I think it's very important that Marco Rubio and Senator Cruz have contributed as senators, compared to what governors have to do in order to achieve, particularly in the area of being politically accountable for outcomes, there's no doubt in my mind that being a governor is far, far better preparation for the ultimate responsibility as president of the United States.
BRZEZINSKI: Two great lines -- proof trumps promise and record trumps rhetoric.
SCARBOROUGH: All right.
BRZEZINSKI: And -- in that case, like a lot. I don't know...
RIDGE: I'm glad you do. I -- you know, I notice the polls that guess that John's -- that Trump right now has a marginal lead in Ohio, but I think on election day...
RIDGE: Ohioans know who cut their taxes. Nobody else on the ballot did. Ohioans know who is responsible for job growth, and nobody else on the ballot was.
Ohioans know that he inherited a mess and created a surplus. So, on election day, John will prevail in Ohio.
BRZEZINSKI: Former Governor...
RIDGE: And I believe he is going to do very well elsewhere, as well.
