Trump: I Didn't Say George Bush Lied To Invade Iraq, But It's A Fact He Did Not Keep Us Safe On 9/11

|

Donald Trump talks to Mike Gallagher about his face-off with Jeb Bush over 9/11 and how much blame lies at the feet of former President George W. Bush at Saturday night's Republican debate.

At Saturday's debate Trump said Bush lied about the existence of weapons of mass destruction because he was wrong, but did not explicitly say the former president lied to the country into war.

"You call it whatever you want. I will tell you. They lied. They said there were weapons of mass destruction and there were none. And they knew there were none. There were no weapons of mass destruction," Trump said Saturday.

Trump phoned in to Gallagher's nationally syndicated program, The Mike Gallagher Show, Monday morning and further explained his position.

"You can't say your brother kept us safe because after the World Trade Center -- the World Trade Center came down during his reign. And, frankly, there was a lot of information that the CIA and the NSA, you know, you had a lot of different agencies that were poorly coordinated because they could have found out about this," Trump said.

"You know, there's a lot of theories," Trump said of the intelligence failures leading up to 9/11. "They did not get a long and they did not share information properly and they could have done something better. Who knows? Who really knows? But you can't say the World Trade Center was not like an event -- I mean, he was president and the World Trade Center came down."

Transcript:

MIKE GALLAGHER, RADIO TALK SHOW HOST: You said something very provocative about 9/11 on Saturday night... I read about it afterward and [the news] said, 'Trump says Bush lied purposely and got us into [Iraq] based on a lie. He lied.' And then I saw the debate and I went, 'That wasn't what Donald Trump said.'

DONALD TRUMP: I didn't say it. They write it the way they want to...

The brother stands up and says, 'My brother kept us safe.' I say, 'Well, what about when the World Trade Center came down?' The worst attack in the history in the United States.

He said, 'Oh, how dare you speak about my brother like that.'

Well, I mean, I am just giving the facts. The World Trade Center you understand, Mike, I mean the World Trade Center came down during his reign. And I said what about that? Did it come down during his reign?

So, you can't say your brother kept us safe because after the World Trade Center -- the World Trade Center came down during his reign. And, frankly, there was a lot of information that the CIA and the NSA, you know, you had a lot of different agencies that were poorly coordinated because they could have found out about this.

You know, there's a lot of theories. They did not get a long and they did not share information properly and they could have done something better. Who knows? Who really knows? But you can't say the World Trade Center was not like an event -- I mean, he was president and the World Trade Center came down.

You have Jeb, who doesn't even like using his last name -- you have Jeb -- and for good reason, I understand that. But you have Jeb saying his brother kept us safe.
