Boehner Explains Retirement From House Speakership: "It's A Wonderful Day"

House Speaker John Boehner capitalized on the busiest news day in history to announce his retirement and drift queitly back to Ohio. He entered this Capitol Hill news conference singing a song.

"Last night I started thinking about this, and I woke up. I said my prayers as I always do, and I decided, you know, today’s the day I’m going to do this. As simple as that," Boehner said.

"It was never about the vote. There was never any doubt about whether I could survive a vote, but I don’t want my members to have to go through this. I certainly don’t want the institution to go through this. Especially when I knew I was thinking about walking out the door anyway. It’s the right time to do it, and frankly I am entirely comfortable doing it."

"I really don't want the institution hurt," he said. "I don't want my colleagues hurt. I don't want to put my colleagues through this."
