On Fox News Channel with Jon Scott, RCP national political reporter Rebecca Berg explained the polticial calculation behind Mike Huckabee's controversial comments about the Iran nuclear deal: “It is so naive that he would trust the Iranians. By doing so, he will take the Israelis and march them to the door of the oven.”
The comments drew direct criticism from the president in Ethiopia, but is that exactly what Huckabee wanted?
JON SCOTT, FOX NEWS CHANNEL: Mike Huckabee drew direct fire from the president with the comment that about the Iran nuclear deal leading the Israelis "right to the door of the oven."
He's doubled down on that remark, hasn't he?
REBECCA BERG, REALCLEARPOLITICS: Yes, he has. What that indicates to me is that this was completely calculated on Huckabee's part. This wasn't just a slip of the tongue. He thought his base would respond well if he used that sort of hyperbolic rhetoric, and it might be helping Huckabee that the president is going after him after this remark.
That's exactly what Huckabee would want! To be seen as a sort of enemy or foil to President Obama and this Iran deal.
He is really speaking, Jon, to an evangelical audience here, and this is something, even though a lot of people have really criticized the wording he used, this is an idea that is very appealing to many of those evangelical voters, and he did have a plan when he said this.
