RAND PAUL: So I think we have to be very careful about who we select as commander in chief. Do we want a commander in chief who is so sloppy about who they give arms to that we are now at war again with ISIS?
Sen. Rand Paul appeared on Fox News Channel’s America’s Newsroom on Tuesday to explain new proof found in Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's diplomatic emails for his long-standing assertion that following the collapse of the Libyan central government in 2011 the U.S. government oversaw the transfer of weapons from Libya's armories (using the CIA annex in Benghazi in 2012) through Turkey and Saudi Arabia into Syria and Iraq in 2013, where they eventually found their way into the hands of the Islamic State in 2014.
In 2013 Paul questioned Clinton during a Senate committee hearing on Benghazi about her knowledge of the US arming the Syrian rebels. Clinton denied having knowledge about the US involvement with arming the rebels. A new batch of previously undisclosed emails about Benghazi written by and to Hillary Clinton have also emerged, despite Clinton previously stating she had turned everything over to the State Department.
"The emails basically indicate that she was a supporter of arming the folks involved in the Syrian civil war (2012-present). Many of the people who were involved in the Libyan Civil War (2011-present) actually were people who had been in prison before as jihadists, so really it is a bad public policy, and then there is the question of whether or not she was being honest with me in the committee whether she knew.
Do I have proof? No, but I have a strong suspicion that she was not telling the truth."
"I think the CIA annex [in Benghazi] was involved with this, collecting weapons in Libya that had been dispersed by toppling Qaddafi, 15,000 shoulder-to-air missiles went missing when Qaddafi was toppled. The CIA annex was trying to collect some of these, ship them through Turkey into Syria. So when she said she didn't know anything about Turkey, the real question was Syria. So my follow up question was were any other countries. And she said no, she was unaware of any arms leaving Libya and going to other countries. I believe that to be factually false."
"Even more than her dishonesty, we need to recognize and debate: Was it a good idea to give weapons to people allied with radical jihadists?"
"I find it hard to believe Hillary Clinton didn’t know," he said. "In fact she was the biggest cheerleader for redistributing these arms to Syrian rebels."
SEN. RAND PAUL: The reason this is an important issue is many of these people who received the arms are not friends of America. Many of them are linked to al Qaeda and al Nusra and some of these weapons may well have ended up in the hands of people who became ISIS. So this is no small fact. Whether or not she told the truth is a big deal.
Some of the emails coming out about Benghazi indicate that maybe she did know a lot more about this arms trade than she let on.
I don’t think our public officials should be allowed to come before congressional committees and lie.
But it’s also concerning because the big problem we face with ISIS. Did it have anything to do with Hillary Clinton arming people who became ISIS or were friends or allies of ISIS?
I think there is a very good chance, because I think there is no way that Hillary Clinton did not know about this. Her private emails show that she was the one supporting arming these people.
