Huckabee Squirms Defending Confederate Flag: "I Don't Personally Display It So It Is Not An Issue For Me"

|

NBCs Chuck Todd unearths 2008 video of Mike Huckabee voicing an opinion about South Carolina's confederate flag. "You don't like people from outside the state telling you what to do with your flag, in fact, if someone came to Arkansas and told us what to do with our flag, we'd tell them where to put the pole."

Huckabee swings between saying that it is not the president's job to tell states what flag to use and the ultimate pass-the-buck answer: "I don't personally display it anywhere so it is not an issue for me."

CHUCK TODD: Governor, how do you feel this morning?

...

MIKE HUCKABEE: I still feel like it is not an issue for a person running for president...

There's 4.8 million people in South Carolina, I don't think that the presence of one lunatic racist, who everybody in this country feels contempt for, and no one is defending, is somehow evidence of the people of South Carolina...

CHUCK TODD: I guess the questions is, should government be sanctioning a symbol that a large chunk of residents believe is a symbol of racism?

MIKE HUCKABEE: Well, it depends which level of government. If the state government of S.C. wishes to address an issue in their state, that is fine.

But if you want to point to me an article and section in the Constitution where it says the U.S. president ought to weigh in on what states use as symbols, then please refresh my memory of that.

For those of us running for president, everyone is being baited with this question. Somehow that has anything to do whatsoever with running for president, my position is it certainly does not... I don't think they want us to weigh in on every little issue in all 50 states...

CHUCK TODD: Are you comfortable displaying the Confederate Battle Flag in public?

MIKE HUCKABEE: I don't personally display it anywhere so it is not an issue for me. That is an issue for the people of South Carolina. Do you display it? I doubt it? Do any of the people on your panel display it? I doubt it.
