Secretary Of Defense Ashton Carter: "I'm Hesitant To Say We Are Winning" Fight Against ISIS

In an interview with Savannah Guthrie on NBC's Today Show this morning Secretary of Defense Ashton Carton was reluctant to say the U.S. is winning the fight against ISIS.

"It will take time to inflict defeat upon ISIL," Carter said. "We're still building the coalition, we're still building the forces and that's why I'm hesitant to say we are winning. I'm confident we will win."

"When you say time do you mean years, do you mean decades?" Guthrie asked.

"It's hard to know that either. Obviously, It's going to depend on how quick we are to build the forces to sustain the defeat," he said.

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE, NBC NEWS: You are known for your candor. are we winning right now?

ASHTON CARTER, SECRETARY OF DEFENSE: I think it's too early to say we are winning, but I think we have certainly inflicted a lot of damage... It will take time to inflict defeat upon ISIL. We're still building the coalition, we're still building the forces and that's why I'm hesitant to say we are winning. I'm confident we will win.

GUTHRIE: When you say time do you mean years, do you mean decades?

CARTER: It's hard to know that either. Obviously, It's going to depend on how quick we are to build the forces to sustain the defeat.
