On Tuesday's broadcast of ABC's The View, co-host Whoopi Goldberg brought up a report showing Hillary Clinton paid women staffers 72 cents on each dollar compared to what her male employees were paid when she was a Senator.
Goldberg likened the pay disparity in Hillary Clinton's Senate office to a "bad fart."
"Unless you know what the jobs were, were the men who got paid more, were they in jobs where they earned," Whoopi Goldberg said, "I mean, it's hard. It's like a bad fart. You put it out, and it wafts and people go, 'Oh, you did it, you did it.' Nobody knows. Is anybody telling us who got paid what for what?"
WHOOPI GOLDBERG: On the other side of the political fence, the salaries of Hillary Clinton's senatorial staff were released and it showed that her female employees were paid 72 cents on each dollar that her male employees were paid.
STACY LONDON, GUEST CO-HOST: That's damaging.
WHOOPI: Well, unless you know what the jobs were, were the men who got paid more, were they in jobs where they earned -- I mean, it's hard. It's like a bad fart. You put it out, and it wafts and people go, 'Oh, you did it, you did it.' Nobody knows. Is anybody telling us who got paid what for what?
ROSIE PEREZ: We don't know the exact details but I have to be honest that, you know, I love Hillary and I was shocked. I was shocked. I was like, oh, no, this doesn't look good. This does not look good.
SAMANTHA PONDER, GUEST CO-HOST: We've been talking about pay equality so much and pardon my ignorance but this is what I don't understand. If you're working for a company and there are a bunch of men around, how are you supposed to know what to ask for if you don't know what they make. I mean, it doesn't feel appropriate to ask the guy how much are you making.
WHOOPI: He's not going to tell you.
PONDER: Right. How are you even supposed to know?
NICOLLE WALLACE: The law of the land is already equal pay for equal work. So, no one is suggesting that Hillary Clinton broke the law. I never thought a Democrat candidate for the nomination for president would be the one giving us a lesson on this, but the problem with the argument that Democrats and liberals make about equal pay is it's impossible to know if the women have the same job or the same job experience as the men. Maybe they made 72 cents to the dollar because they didn't have the same title. Maybe one was the press secretary and the other was the deputy.
