Daughter Of Eric Garner: "This Is Not A Black And White Issue"

|

On Thursday night Erica Garner, the daughter of Eric Garner, appeared on CNN to discuss her father's death at the hands of the NYPD and if she viewed it as a racial issue. She was pressed several times and ways by CNN host Don Lemon about the racial aspects of the case but Garner stood by her initial comment that this was not a "black and white issue."

"You heard our Chris Cuomo and Brooke Baldwin (CNN anchors) out there and they were saying, they were talking about the diversity in the crowd. It wasn't just black people, it wasn't just white people," Lemon said to Erica Garner.

"This is not a black and white issue," Garner said. "This is a national crisis. Like, I believe this is a crisis. i mean for white people to come out and show how deeply they was hurt and like Asians and different people from different nations and different parts of the world to come out and show that they felt the same way I felt on that video. I greatly appreciate it. It is like a sense of I am not the only one that feels this way."

"You said this is not a black and white issue. But in that do you say, are you saying this is not an issue of race? You think it is a racial issue?" Lemon pressed Garner.

"I really doubt it," Garner told Lemon. "It was about the officers pride. It was about my father being 6'4", 350 pounds. And he wanted to be, you know, the top cop that brings this big man down. because he is just big. I mean, my father wasn't even doing anything."

"A lot of people will be surprised because you know this is being made out to be a racial issue and you are saying you don't think it is about race," a perplex Don Lemon reacted.

"Being that my father was black and the officer was white, I mean that's different races," Garner said, "but as far as the situation i can't really say it's like really like a black and white issue. It it is about, you know the police officers and abusing their power."

DON LEMON, CNN: What did -- what do you make of the grand jury's decision? Obviously, I'm sure you were not happy when you found out, your initial reaction and what your thoughts after that?

ERICA GARNER, DAUGHTER OF ERIC GARNER: What was my thoughts? It was like I expected it. But it was also a disappointment because being that we got the video and my father dies on the video and then you have these I guess politics or you know, certain people out there that wants to promote body cameras. Okay. My dad died on national TV on a camera. He still didn't get justice. So what is justice going to do with these body cameras but promote more killing?

LEMON: You heard our Chris Cuomo and Brooke Baldwin out there and they were saying, they were talking about the diversity in the crowd. It wasn't just black people, it wasn't just white people --

GARNER: Because this is not a black and white issue. This is a national crisis. Like, I believe this is a crisis. i mean for white people to come out and show how deeply they was hurt and like Asians and different people from different nations and different parts of the world to come out and show that they felt the same way I felt on that video. I greatly appreciate it. It is like a sense of I am not the only one that feels this way.

LEMON: You said this is not a black and white issue. But in that do you say, are you saying this is not an issue of race? You think it is a racial issue?

GARNER: I really doubt it. It was about the officers pride. It was about my father being 6'4", 350 pounds. And he wanted to be, you know, the top cop that brings this big man down. because he is just big. I mean, my father wasn't even doing anything. I mean -- he wasn't really doing nothing. He didn't have no gun. He ain't run, he ain't smack him. Nothing.

LEMON: A lot of people will be surprised because you know this is being made out to be a racial issue and you are saying you don't think it is about race.

GARNER: I'm not.

LEMON: And you are saying you don't think it is about race.

GARNER: Being that my father was black and the officer was white, I mean that's different races, but as far as the situation i can't really say it's like really like a black and white issue. It it is about, you know the police officers and abusing their power.
