VandeHei: Shutdown And Obamacare, Poetic Justice For GOP

JIM VANDEHEI, POLITICO: The most important thing to remember in the health care debate is that almost every Republican of consequence right now is a child of the health care revolution. They came to power in 2009 because of health care. It was when health care became a big debate that suddenly the president started to lose independents. That's when the Tea Party rose up and became a real movement. So your Governor Christies, your Rubios, your Rand Pauls, your Ted Cruzes, most of these rank-and-file members in the House, they all were elected because of Obamacare. They didn't even serve in government pre-Obamacare. So their entire political career has been defined by a debate over Obamacare. And so there's a poetic justice that on the day you're shutting down the government you have the Obamacare exchanges starting. And so this debate, while seeming severe in the moment, it's just part of a much longer narrative that's not going to end today. It's not even going to end when the shutdown concludes. It's not going to probably end until after the 2014 or 2016 elections because Republicans are not going to back down in their effort to defund and ultimately get rid of Obamacare, and there's no way that President Obama or Democrats would ever compromise. It is the signature domestic accomplishment of this presidency. It's crazy to think that the president could ever or would ever truly compromise to get rid of anything else in the health care law.
