Axelrod: Selling Healthcare Reform Has Been A "Communications Challenge"

David Axelrod blames Republicans for Obama's healthcare reform bill being unpopular. Axelrod says Republicans are "fanning the flames of discontent."

Later in the interview, Axelrod says it has been a "communications challenge" for the administration to sell Obamacare to the public. Axelrod said Obama "shoved the politics aside" during the legislative process in 2010.

Chuck Todd, MSNBC host: "Right now it does seem like you are at a net deficit overall on the perception of the bill, even if individually some things poll test very well."

David Axelrod: "Well, let me say that the Republicans are very good at fanning the flames of discontent. Their whole campaign is predicated on fanning flames of discontent, so it's not surprising that they do that here."

When asked if he has more work to do in selling healthcare reform, Axelrod described the situation as a "communications challenge."

"He shoved the politics aside and do what he felt was right for the American people and the future of the country. I'm proud of him for doing that, but it has been a communications challenge and, you know, we're going to plow forward with it. But again, I think the larger issue here is that it's already -- even though it's not fully implement -- it's already giving greater security to the American people and we're going to make sure that they understand that," Axelrod said on MSNBC this morning.
