Carney: "Economic Positive" That Young People Are Leaving Workforce

White House press secretary Jay Carney says it is an "economic positive" that young people are dropping out of the workforce. Carney also says "an aging population" also contributes to a shrinking workforce.

Reporter: There are 19 million underemployed or unemployment Americans. How concerned is the White House that these number will inevitably have to take a dip before we see real recovery as these people re-enter the workforce.

Jay Carney, White House press secretary: I think there are some of those, I suppose, who don't wish us well politically have tried to make a point about this and the facts are that in these most recent numbers this is not an issue of people leaving the workforce. That the numbers are positive across the board. Now what we have said is --

Reporter: It's a reality. That's not a political point to score. I mean, thats a reality that people stopped looking for work and then they have to re-enter.

Carney: Let's look at the facts. A large percentage of that is due to younger people getting more education which in the end is an economic positive. There is a fact that this increase in the number of people leaving the workforce has been a trend and a fact since 2000 because of an aging population. Which is not say that this is wholly -- it's not something that I would wholly disregarded as an issue.
