Schakowsky for Senate?

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) is still considering a Senate run, and she has commissioned a third poll this month assessing her chances in a crowded primary field.

The poll, commissioned by Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, shows Schakowsky narrowly leading state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias 24 to 22 percent, with Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) at 18 percent.

Schakowsky would have to give up her safe House seat to mount a competitive statewide campaign – and sounds hesitant to take that risk. She had said that she would definitely run if there was an off-year special election for the seat, which wouldn’t require her to step down from the House.

If she ran, Schakowsky would begin a primary against Giannoulias at a fundraising disadvantage. She reported just under $400,000 in her campaign account at the end of March, a credible total but well short of the $1 million that Giannoulias has banked.
