Judy Chu rolls Jill Biden-style

Congress is home to at least a half-dozen Ph.D.’s but for the most part those members don’t advertise it. Not so with Democrat Judy Chu, a front-runner among the 12 candidates who filed to run in the May 19 California special election to replace former Rep. Hilda Solis.

Chu, a member of the state Board of Equalization and a former state legislator, is intent on reminding voters she is Dr. Chu (her doctorate is in psychology). Her campaign website is emblazoned with numerous uses of the honorific and her press releases typically refer to her as Dr. Judy Chu.

You probably would not know that based on newspaper stories about the 32nd District race, since most papers don’t typically use “Dr.” unless the person in question holds a medical degree.

For an interesting story about vice presidential wife Jill Biden’s preference for the title, check out this Los Angeles Times piece from February.
