Giannoulias also in the million dollar club

More on the fundraising front: Illinois state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias has raised $1.1 million in one month as he runs for the seat of Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.).

Giannoulias raised the money in less than a month -- all of it since he announced he was forming an exploratory committee for the Senate on March 3. The fundraising reports, due on April 15, covers the period from January 1 to March 31.

“Considering we have yet to even announce our candidacy, we’ve received an incredible outpouring of support from people who are excited for a new kind of leadership in Washington.” Giannoulias said in a statement.

Giannoulias announced the money is primarily from individual contributors -- he has declared that he's not raising any money from corporate political action committees or from lobbyists. Giannoulias is also able to self-finance a campaign, a significant asset as he prepares to run for the Senate.

The total, first reported by the Chicago Sun-Times, gives him a sizable stockpile of cash as he prepares for a competitive Democratic primary. Former Commerce Secretary Bill Daley is considering running in the primary, and Burris may also be running for election.

A Burris spokeswoman told the Sun-Times that the senator had not begun his fundraising activities yet.
