Bono Mack gets challenger

Democrats are California dreamin’.

On Thursday, Palm Springs Mayor Steve Pougnet announced that he was challenging Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) -- the latest California Democrat to jump into a House race.

Bono Mack’s southern California district has historically voted Republican. But, as in other parts of the state, Democrats have seen registration gains in there. Barack Obama won the district 52 percent to 47 percent in November.

In a statement today, Pougnet offered up a preview of his campaign, saying he would run as a centrist and paint Bono Mack as an out-of-touch conservative.

“I’m not a partisan politician. I won’t play political games. I’m bringing for Congress to bring a renewed focus on the needs of everyday citizens, and to replace a partisan politician who is out of touch with her constituents.”
