Special election set for Solis seat

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger scheduled the special election primary for Rep. Hilda Solis’ vacant House seat for May 19.

The primary is expected to determine Solis’ successor in Congress, given the Los Angeles-area district’s heavily Democratic composition. Three leading Democrats are vying for the nomination: state senator Gil Cedillo, Board of Equalization Chairwoman Judy Chu and investment banker Emanuel Pleitez.

California has an all-party primary for special elections – all candidates run on the same ballot. If no one wins an outright majority of the vote, the two top vote-getters from each party will compete in a special general election on July 14.

Turnout in the primary is expected to be high because it coincides with elections for six statewide propositions on the state’s budget.

Solis was confirmed as Labor Secretary last month after serving four full terms in the House.
