Fallin leaving the House

Another Republican is leaving Congress for the greener pastures of statewide office.

Rep. Mary Fallin (R-Okla.), who was just elected in 2006, announced to her supporters on a conference call last Friday that she would be running for governor.

She could face a primary challenge from a familiar face: Rep. Tom Cole, who headed the NRCC last election cycle, is also considering a gubernatorial campaign.

Fallin becomes the seventh House Republican to retire from the House -- and all of the retiring members are seeking higher statewide office . Her Oklahoma City-based district is heavily Republican, and isn’t expected to be contested by Democrats.

Some of the Republican primary candidates in 2006 have already announced they’re running again, including the Club for Growth-backed Kevin Calvey. Oklahoma City mayor Mick Cornett, who finished second to Fallin, is also considering a campaign.
