Another special election in California?

The AP is reporting that Rep. Ellen O. Tauscher (D-Calif.) will be tapped to serve as the Obama administration’s undersecretary of state for arms control and international security.

That would open up Tauscher’s suburban Bay Area seat, which she has held since 1996. The district is solidly Democratic, giving Obama 65 percent of the vote, according to Swing State Project estimates. There hasn’t been a competitive race here since 2000 before the seat was redistricted to make it more Democratic.

A special election primary is already scheduled for May 19 in Labor Secretary Hilda Solis’ old Los Angeles-area district; if Tauscher leaves the House, that may be the most likely date to hold the primary in this seat as well.
