Pearce eyeing a political comeback

Former GOP Rep. Steve Pearce, who badly lost his New Mexico Senate campaign against Tom Udall, is attempting a political comeback -- either for governor or for his old House seat, which flipped to the Democrats last year.

From the Las Cruces Sun-News:

Pearce, 61, said he's eyeing the 2010 gubernatorial and 2nd Congressional District races.

"We fully intend to run for something," said Pearce in a phone interview last week. "To say I want one over the other —it's still a bit early to lean one direction over the other."

He seems already to have begun the groundwork for a race.

Pearce said he's been traveling New Mexico and talking to county-level Republican Party leadership.

He said he'll focus attention especially on the 1st and 3rd Congressional Districts.

"We'll do some polling up there," he said. "We're going to start building that network up north that we have down south."

Pearce would have to defeat freshman Democrat Harry Teague if he wanted to take back his old House seat.  Teague won 56 percent of the vote against Republican Ed Tinsley -- in a sprawling New Mexico district that has traditionally favored Republicans.
